June Adventures, Community Highlights, and Upcoming Opportunities

In June our staff had an exciting tour of the Mica and Revelstoke dams, and we had a fantastic guide—our very own band member, Raymond Paul, who is a Construction Officer with BC Hydro. If you’re curious about the ins and outs of these massive structures or if you’re interested in employment or camp opportunities at Mica Dam, reach out to Tetku for more info. Plus, she’s got the scoop on training and career opportunities with BC Hydro. Check out more photos on our website!

Raymond Paul gives OKIBGC a tour of the BC Hydro dam facilities.

On June 26, during our community update, we were given the opportunity to share what we’ve been up to, a big thank you to the 30 members who joined us to review our last quarter’s activities and financials! If you missed it but still want to get the lowdown, we have handouts available—just let us know if you’d like an electronic or hard copy. Your Group of Companies has been busy, and we’re thrilled to share our progress with you.

Also, on July 11, We had a blast at the grand opening of the scʕásxən Quarry, and it was a huge success with about 50 people in attendance. Councillor Rochelle Saddleman gave a warm welcome, and Elder Pauline Archachan blessed the event with a beautiful opening prayer. The name scʕásxən, chosen by our Elders, is the original name of the gravel pit—pronounced “shas-kin.” Check out the Global News story , along with the Vernon Morning Star story.

Keep an eye out for upcoming employment opportunities and a material price list on our website.

The newest for forestry, Andy Groom and Qui Parker led a fascinating field salvage review up the Bear Creek Forest Service Road. We talked standards around salvage—what to leave, what to take—and visited a newly planted riparian area. Check out the photos to see the beauty of our efforts in restoring the land!

A big shoutout to everyone who came out to share feedback on the Duck Lake Development this past month! Here’s what we heard you want: recreational land, a community meeting place like Bluebird, affordable student housing, and an Amazon center/warehouse. Got more ideas? We’re all ears! Email us at info@okibgc.ca or call 250-545-3424.

And it’s about that time to get your clubs ready! Our golf tournament is coming together beautifully, and player spots sold out in just 2 hours! Don’t worry if you missed out—you can still snag a spot by becoming a sponsor. For more info or to join the waitlist, contact Tetku at tetku@okibgc.ca.
